A White Christmas My family isnt really into traditions. We dont celebrate many holidays because a lot of our extended family doesnt live within a drivable distance. However, the one tradition that my family does have is our annual ski trip over winter break. This year was no exception, so my family packed up our winter clothing and headed to Colorado to spend a week in the snowy mountains. (I always find it funny that I look forward to going home over break to escape the Boston weather, but spend half of the break in arguably worse weather than the Boston weather.) This winter break has been an actual break for me this year- it seems like almost every other holiday is cluttered with things I said Id do during the semester and didnt have time to do. But with things lining up now, I can finally take the time to decompress and enjoy spending time with my family. I dont know if there are that many sensations in the world that can compare to skiing. When youre on the slope, its just you and the mountain. You point your skis down the hill and let gravity help you on your way. As you turn down the hill, you feel like youre floating. Its honestly this magical sensation. If youve never been before, I really suggest trying it once in your lifetime! Although I cant take you all skiing with me, I did take some photos so I could share the experience. Being out here reminded me that the world is a beautiful place. Its easy to forget that when youre stuck in your bubble at home or at MIT. Zipcar Co-Founder Robin Chase shares her start-up stories with Hult students

Zipcar co-founder and Buzzcar CEO Robin Chase talked cars, start-ups, and more with current and prospective Hult students, alumni, and guests at the San Francisco installment of the school’s global Visionary Speaker Series.    Over 300 members of the Hult community came to the Westin San Francisco Market Street on January 20 to hear Chase’s talk on reinventing the transportation industry. She opened the evening asking, â€Å"Who here wants to be part of a start-up?† Not surprisingly, the majority of the hands in the room went up, and Chase proceeded to share her inspiring story of taking Zipcar from a one-car, 22-member service to the world’s largest carsharing company, and how she expanded her vision to create Buzzcar in France.    Chase’s discussion was filled with personal stories giving her elevator pitch inside of an elevator with an Enterprise exec and photos proud members with their cars, and the lime green Beetle that started it all. She also shared some  staggering statistics, such as the fact that it costs around $9000 a year to own a car, yet most people only drive their cars 5 percent of the time. And she offered some valuable advice, based on her experience. Some of her top words of wisdom for the Hult community: â€Å"Luck is when preparation meets opportunity,† and to the entrepreneurs-in-the-making: â€Å"What you lack in money, we make up for in brains and speed.†    Following her speech, Chase sat down on stage with Hult San Francisco Executive Director Marty Manley for some casual conversation and a question and answer session, revealing that as an undergrad, she was a triple major in English, French and philosophy. She later studied at the MIT Sloan School of Management and credits her business education for giving her confidence to solve business problems, which resonated with the Hult crowd.    Chase even stayed to meet and chat with students long after the event itself was over.      Students expressed their excitement via Twitter, calling the talk amazing and inspiring and saying Im ready to change the world now!    The Visionary Speaker Series is a revamp of Hult’s Executive Speaker Series. Best Majors for Pre-med Students

Are you aspiring to join the medical field? Your undergraduate major isnt nearly as important to medical school admissions as most students think. In fact, the very idea of a pre-med major is misleading because you can complete required pre-med coursework while pursuing any major. And while it may be tempting to think that biology is the best major for a medical school application, admissions data suggests otherwise. Math, humanities, and physical science majors slightly outperform biology majors on the MCAT, and they are also slightly more likely to receive acceptance to med school. These statistical differences are small, but they should be encouraging to med school hopefuls who also have interests in other areas. However, regardless of major, medical school applicants do need to plan their undergraduate classes carefully. To be prepared for the MCAT and medical school admissions requirements, all pre-med students should take classes in biology, chemistry (especially organic chemistry), physics, and math (calculus will be required by some programs). Courses in psychology and sociology are also a good idea. If you have completed this coursework successfully, your major doesnt matter so much to medical schools; in fact, a unique major might make you stand out. All of the majors in the following list will help you hone important skills needed for medical school. Read on to learn more about the best majors for pre-med students. Biology Biology is a logical choice for undergrad students intending to go to medical school. For one, students who want to go into medicine presumably enjoy the biological sciences, so they will be studying a field that genuinely interests them. But also, biology majors will—in the course of their normal coursework—fulfill most prerequisite coursework for medical school applications. Biology is the most popular major for medical school applicants. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), 29,443 students who majored in the biological sciences applied to medical school, and they had a mean MCAT score of 505.5. Of those students, 11,843 entered medical school for an enrollment rate of 40.2%. Math and Statistics According to the AAMC, math and statistics majors have the highest mean score on the MCAT of any major: 509.4. They also have the highest enrollment rate: 48% of math-major applicants end up attending medical school. The reality is that most math and statistics majors do not go into health fields, but when they do, they are clearly quite successful. Math majors are good at problem-solving and logical thinking. They are trained to work with data, map out patterns, and find solutions. While the MCAT doesnt have a math section, it does have many questions that involve reading tables and graphs to draw conclusions. Engineering Most engineering majors plan to be engineers, but the skills learned as an undergraduate engineering major can be extremely useful for medical school and the practice of medicine. The human body, after all, is an extremely complex machine that functions using mechanical, electrical, chemical, and fluid systems. Engineers are taught to think in ways that have clear applications to the human body. Their ability to analyze complex systems and find solutions to system failures has clear applications within the medical profession. Nearly any engineering field can be a good choice for med school preparation. Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, and materials science all have applications in health fields, and they all teach skills that are good preparation for the MCAT. The AAMC does not have admissions data for engineering majors because it is an uncommon pre-med choice, but its likely that engineers would perform similarly to math majors. English English may seem like a rather unusual choice for medical school preparation, but data suggests otherwise. English and other humanities majors do better on the MCAT than biology majors, with a mean score of 507.6 compared to biologys 505.5. Similarly, humanities majors are statistically more successful with their med school applications than biology majors, even though they tend to have lower overall GPAs and science GPAs. What explains this situation? Think about the training English majors receive: English study is all about critical thinking, careful reading, textual analysis, analytical writing, and clear communication. Such skills are obviously helpful for the MCATs Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section, but they can come into play in other sections as well. Also, English majors are well-prepared to write their personal statements and often perform well in interviews. If you love English but want to go to medical school, dont shy away from an English major, and remember that other humanities fields—history, philosophy, languages—have similar advantages. Spanish The argument for a Spanish major is similar to that of an English major. Youll learn critical thinking, analytical writing, close reading, and effective communication skills. And like English and other humanities majors, youll be in a field that outperforms biology majors on the MCAT, which is an encouraging sign. Spanish has some extra advantages though. By becoming proficient in a second language, youll be able to communicate with more patients. In the United States, Spanish is more prevalent than any other foreign language. Communication barriers are serious problems in hospitals, and many employers will give preference to job candidates who have second language skills. You may also find that your Spanish language skills open up interesting medical school opportunities for studying and practicing medicine abroad. Psychology Students in the social sciences—psychology, sociology, anthropology—tend to score about the same as biology majors on the MCAT. According to the AAMC, they earned a mean score of 505.6 compared to biologys 505.5. They also enroll at a slightly higher rate (41% vs 40%). The MCAT section Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior will be a breeze for psychology majors. Many psychology majors also study biochemistry, and classroom subjects have direct relevance to medical school topics: cognitive function, physiology, mental health disorders, and the workings of the brain. Plus, as we learn more about the close connection between mental and physical health, a psychology major will become increasingly relevant to the world of medicine. Physics Students who major in the physical sciences—physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology—are among the top performers on the MCAT with a mean score of 508. Their medical school enrollment rate is slightly below humanities and math majors, but still 6% higher than biology majors (46% vs 40%). Physics majors tend to be excellent problem solvers and critical thinkers. They understand scientific processes and research methods. They learn valuable quantitative skills and can grasp how systems work. The bodys electrical and mechanical systems will be easy for a physics student to interpret. They will also have an advantage on the MCATs Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section. Nursing Nursing majors do not necessarily have to become nurses, and the skills they learn in nursing school have obvious relevance to medical school. A nursing student will have a greater knowledge of anatomy, nutrition, physiology, and microbiology than applicants from most other majors. When it comes time for clinical practice in medical school, nursing students will already feel at home because of their undergraduate clinical experiences. Math and English majors may have higher mean scores on the MCAT, but nursing majors will have far more familiarity with hospitals, medical equipment, and patient interactions. Nurses and students in the health sciences have mean MCAT scores that are lower than other majors (a 502.4 compared to a 505.6 across all majors). They also enroll at a lower rate (36% compared to 41% for all majors). That said, they have already demonstrated their dedication to a medical profession, and their nursing background can give them an invaluable understanding of a hospital environment that medical school admissions committees dont overlook. To understand the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire of 1911, its helpful to get a picture of the conditions at the factory before and at the time of the fire. Conditions at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Most of the workers were young immigrants, Russian Jews or Italians, with some German and Hungarian immigrants as well. Some were as young as 12 to 15 years old, and often sisters or daughters and mother or cousins were all employed at the shop. The 500-600 workers were paid at piecework rates, so that pay for any individual depended on the skill of the work done (men mostly did the collars, which was a more highly paid task) and how quickly one worked. Pay averaged around $7 per week for most, with some paid as high as $12 per week. At the time of the fire, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was not a union shop, though some workers were members of the ILGWU.  The 1909 Uprising of the Twenty Thousand and the 1910 Great Revolt had led to growth in the ILGWU and to some preferential shops, but the Triangle Factory was not among those. Triangle Shirtwaist Factory owners Max Blanck and Isaac Harris were concerned about employee theft. On the ninth floor there were only two doors; one was routinely locked, leaving open only the door to the stairwell to the Greene Street exit. That way, the company could inspect handbags and any packages of workers on their way out at the end of the work day. There were no sprinklers in the building. There had been no fire drills to practice response to fires, though a fire expert, hired in 1909 on the advice of an insurance company, had recommended implementing fire drills. There was one fire escape which proved not very strong, and an elevator. On March 25, as most Saturdays, workers had begun to clear the work areas and fill bins with fabric scraps. Garments and cloth were in piles, and there would have been considerable fabric dust from the cutting and sewing process. Most of the light inside the building came from gas lamps. There have been many studies in the past which have investigated the effect of personality on our mental abilities. For instance Hannon et al. (1995) conducted research into the effect of extraversion and introversion on long term and short term forthcoming memory. Results show extroverts came up with less errors in comparison to introverts in regards to short and long term memory. In this present study we aim to investigate the effects of extraversion and introversion on time perception. With the directional hypothesis suggesting there will be a negative correlation between extraversion and time perception, it is later noted that this isnt the case, resulting in the hypothesis being rejected. Eysenck (1990) he believes there is a biological basis for personality (cited in Burger, 2000). To support this claim Eysenck argued the consistency of extraversion and introversion over a long period of time, implying your environment doesnt affect our biological make up. Studies have supported this point, in which he found that persons level of individual difference remains around the same level over a period of time. Conley (1984, 1985) found that participants showed a consistent level of extraversion - introversion over a period of 45 years (cited in Burger, 2000), however this does not say whether extraversion- introversion is determined by biology, as our environment does play a part in our development. During his career, Eysenck came up with different questionnaires to assess the traits in ones personality. He came up with the Maudsley Personality Inventory, the Eysenck Personality Inventory, and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire - abbreviated as EPQ (Pervin, Cervone, John, 2005). Reggae contains various instruments from the drums and other percussions, to bass, guitars, keyboards, horns, vocals, ect. Reggae is still very popular today all around the world. Hip Hop is also a very influential factor in the Black British culture, however it represented a new generation of blacks in Britain. This type of music was seen in â€Å"Some Kind of Black’ as moving on from the generation of new immigrants to actually being born in Britain. Hip Hop started in the 1970s and became very popular in the 1980s. Most of the hip hop music in Britain was created by men and was seen as very masculine and tough. This type of music definitely impacted the perception on blacks and developed various stereotypes for the Black British society. It portrayed the criminal, gangster blacks in society, which gave society a very harsh and negative outlook on men. Also a lot of this music was concentrated on sex, or drugs. During the post war Britain era, many women were seen as objects or sex symbols and a lot of this music contained this perception of women so it definitely influenced the view of women at the time. A lot of the rappers, or individuals who were involved with hip hop were always seen with a lot of women, so the individuals who saw them as idols, were impacted by this type of behavior, which didn’t help the view of women. With the influences of music, and blacks defining their own blackness identity throughout Britain, the Black British culture has made a lot of progress in society as a whole. Like America, Black British was portrayed as invisible, criminals, and also accompanied lower positions in the labor market. However, today Black British are occupying better paid jobs, political positions, and incorporation their own identity and culture within the British society. Black British has various aspects of their culture however music is one I find very interesting and very influential to the blacks in Britain.
